Dr Amy Sanyahumbi

Amy Sanyahumbi, MD, MPH is a pediatric cardiologist with Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital, based in Lilongwe, Malawi, where she has lived and worked for over a decade. One of only two pediatric cardiologists in Malawi, she leads the pediatric cardiology clinic and consult service at Kamuzu Central Hospital, integrating clinical care, research, and workforce development to strengthen cardiovascular capacity in the country.

Her research focuses on rheumatic heart disease, including implementation research to expand access to cardiac diagnostics in resource-limited settings and previously an NIH Fogarty K01 award studying adherence to secondary prophylaxis in children with RHD.

She is the Malawi site PI for the ARC study investigating biomarkers for acute rheumatic fever. Dr. Sanyahumbi has authored multiple publications on RHD in Malawi, served on the AHA Committee on Rheumatic Fever, Endocarditis, and Kawasaki Disease — co-authoring an AHA Presidential Advisory on benzathine penicillin reactions in children with RHD — and currently serves on the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Global Health Committee.

She conducts echocardiography training workshops nationwide and mentors district hospital clinicians in pediatric cardiac diagnosis and care, helping to build sustainable pediatric cardiology capacity across Malawi.
