Dr Ela Fernandes
Dr Anferida (Ela) Fernandes is a researcher with Menzies School of Health Research in Timor-Leste, where she contributes to studies focused on acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD).
Her work supports efforts to strengthen evidence-based prevention, diagnosis and care for ARF and RHD in Timor-Leste. Dr Fernandes is an emerging leader in ARF and RHD research, collaborating with researchers and clinicians across the Asia-Pacific region and globally to advance strategies that reduce the burden of rheumatic heart disease. In addition to her research activities, Dr Fernandes is committed to building local clinical capacity.
She mentors healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses and midwives, in echocardiography and provides ongoing support to strengthen skills, confidence and independent practice. Passionate about locally led research and sustainable health system strengthening, Dr Fernandes is dedicated to advancing research capacity in Timor-Leste and improving cardiovascular health outcomes for communities most affected by rheumatic heart disease.
