What is Spark Tank?
The RHD Innovation Spark Tank is a live pitch competition designed to support innovation and accelerate progress in addressing rheumatic heart disease.
This initiative provides a platform for emerging researchers and cross-sector innovators to present high-impact, early-stage ideas that address critical gaps in RHD research, policy, advocacy, and implementation.
Ten (10) selected finalists will be supported to refine, strengthen, and showcase their ideas at The Spark Tank plenary session during the second World Congress on Rheumatic Heart Disease in Perth, Australia (11-14 November 2026).
Who Should Apply?
We welcome applications from all countries and regions:
Early- to mid-career researchers (within 10 years of research relative to opportunity)
Clinicians, policymakers, and advocates
People with lived experience
Innovators who may not yet have an extensive track record in research or funding
What Finalists Receive
Two-month structured mentorship program (i.e., 1:1 mentoring, communications and pitch training, etc.)
Opportunity to present at the World Congress on RHD
Opportunity to compete for seed funding (AUD)
Global exposure and networking opportunities
Pathways to future funding and collaborative opportunities
Scope of Applications
Applications are encouraged from across research, innovation, advocacy, and policy. Proposals may focus on (but are not limited to):
Research and Innovation
Basic science
Epidemiology and surveillance
Diagnostic technologies and approaches
Clinical trials
Vaccine development
Computer science (e.g. AI tools)
Policy, Advocacy, and Implementation
National or regional RHD policy roadmap development
Advocacy campaigns
Community-led RHD awareness initiatives and activities
Policy briefs to influence government investment in RHD prevention
Control and implementation programs, including implementation of Resolution WHA71.14 on Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease
Strengthening lived experience voices and advocacy
The Spark Tank Pitch
Ten finalists will be selected to present a 5-minute pitch, followed by a 3-minute Q&A at a dedicated congress session. The judging panel will include experts from a range fields, including science, translation, policy, advocacy, and lived experience.
Awards
The winner will be selected by the judging panel, with an additional People’s Choice award voted on by the audience.
One (1) Panel Award winner and one (1) People’s Choice Award winner will each receive AUD $25,000 in seed funding. Runner-up awards for each category may be provided, subject to funding availability.

Application Process
Step 1: Complete the application form
Applicants must submit the Spark Tank Application Form, outlining:
Your background and experience
The problem being addressed
Your proposed idea or solution
Expected impact
Timeline (funded projects should be designed for implementation over a two-year period).
Team members and collaborators
Step 2: Selection of Finalists
Applicants will be reviewed by a Selection Committee of leaders across research, innovation, advocacy, and policy. The top 10 finalists, regardless of focus area, will be selected based on:
Innovation and originality
Potential impact on RHD burden
Clarity of approach and timeline
Strength of collaboration

Applicants maintain ownership of their original ideas, intellectual property, and project concepts submitted as part of the RHD Innovation Spark Tank application and live pitch.
Applicants should note that:
Applications and pitches will be reviewed by panel members and mentors for assessment and mentoring purposes only
Finalists will present their ideas in a public forum during the Congress
Applicants are encouraged to consider confidentiality, intellectual property protection, and publication strategies appropriate to their project prior to public presentation.
Where relevant, successful applicants are encouraged to work with their organisation or collaborators regarding intellectual property management, ethics, governance, and commercialisation considerations.

Consumer representatives or people with lived experience (lived experience refers to the firsthand knowledge, perspectives and everyday realities of people who are or have been directly affected by the condition, including individuals living with RHD, families, carers and communities).
Applicants do not need to have a strong established funding track record.

Yes. International applications are welcome, particularly from regions disproportionately affected by RHD.

Yes. Applications may be submitted by individuals or teams. Multidisciplinary and collaborative applications are encouraged.

No. However, applicants should demonstrate appropriate support, partnerships, mentorship, or governance structures relevant to the proposed project.

Travel support may be available through the World Congress on Rheumatic Heart Disease 2026 travel grant program for delegates from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Please note that travel grant applications are assessed separately from the Spark Tank selection process.

No. A detailed budget is not required at the application stage. However, applicants should briefly outline how seed funding will support their proposed project.
Shortlisted finalists may be asked to provide additional budget information prior to award allocation.

Ethics approval is not required at the application stage.
However, projects involving human participants, data collection, or related research activities may require ethics approval before project commencement. Successful applicants will be responsible for obtaining all relevant approvals.

The mentorship program will run for approximately two months prior to the Congress.

A separate People’s Choice Award may also be determined through audience voting.

Yes. Successful recipients will be asked to provide a 12-month progress update and a final summary report at end of project (year 2) outlining activities, achievements, and outcomes arising from the seed funding.
